THE economy is performing sufficiently well to ensure that Ireland will be one of the initial members of European Monetary Union, according to TSB chief executive Mr Harry Lorton. Speaking in Cork yesterday, Mr Lorton said the benefits of EMU will include the elimination of further barriers to trade, increased liquidity in the capital markets and fostering a low interest rate environment.
