The ECB has increased the number of euro bank notes to be printed before the date of their introduction on January 1st, 2002 from 13 billion to 14.5 billion. The increase is mainly due to a higher-than-expected estimate for banknotes in circulation, demand for a greater number of low-denomination bank notes and a slower take-up of electronic money transmission.
