Mr Wim Duisenberg's controversial appointment as first director of the European Union's central bank won overwhelming backing on Monday from a key committee of the EU's assembly.

The European Parliament's economic and monetary committee, meeting in Strasbourg, France, voted 50 to one to recommend the nomination of Duisenberg. There were five abstentions.
