THE prospect of a £35 billion sterling merger between British telecommunications giants BT and Cable & Wireless came a step closer yesterday after top executives of the two companies became directly involved in talks for the first time.

C&W chairman Dr Brian Smith met BT chairman Sir Iain Vallance to restart the talks after the Easter break.
