GROWTH in British retail sales accelerated sharply last month, prompting City predictions of further interest rate rises by the Bank of England even if the Chancellor, Mr Gordon Brown, tightens fiscal policy in his maiden Budget next month. Retail sales volumes rose 1.1 per cent last, a much bigger increase than the rise of around 0.5 per cent forecast by City seers.
