British economic growth waned in the first quarter of 2000, undershooting forecasts and easing pressure on the Bank of England to raise interest rates next week, official figures showed yesterday. The Office for National Statistics said a preliminary estimate of gross domestic product growth was 0.4 per cent in the first quarter of the year compared with 0.8 per cent in the fourth quarter of 1999.
