DRINKS grouping Bass was last night nursing multi million pound losses from its failed bid to become Britain's biggest brewer after the British government blocked a proposed merger with Carlsberg Tetley.

The President of the Board of Trade, Mrs Margaret Beckett, stopped the link up on the advice of the Monopolies and Mergers Commission due to competition concerns. The announcement brings to an end almost of year of waiting since the merger plans were first unveiled last summer.
